HOW IT WORKS!

Winter Protection Anti - desiccant

Winter protection and anti-desiccant treatments help reduce water loss, prevent winter damage, and maintain your landscape’s color and health. In Southeast Michigan’s harsh winters, protecting evergreens can prevent costly replacements. Along with sprays, mulching, proper watering, and burlap covers also help minimize cold-weather damage.

Is winter protection my only line of defense?

No, it is not, nor is it your best option. Best practices include a combination of cultural, environmental, and chemical adaptions. With proper care and/or optimal weather patterns, many plants can survive the winter without any intervention, though considering many landscapes have a value not far from the home itself, it is important to do everything we can to prevent damage, loss, or replacements.

CULTURAL PRACTICE TIPS

MULCH

Spring and fall fertilization are two important times for deep root fertilization. During the spring, applying a good fertilizer can help to give trees the nutrients they need after the harsh winter months and prepare them for healthy growth during the summer. Fall fertilization is also important, as it helps to replenish minerals that may have been depleted throughout the summer months, while also helping to harden off trees and shrubs before winter

BURLAP

Chlorosis is a common problem in many trees and shrubs due to their inability to access iron manganese, or zinc from soil. Deep root fertilizers can be applied as a treatment for this issue, which will allow iron manganese, and zinc to be delivered directly to roots, thus providing plants with the necessary nutrition they need. This process can be especially beneficial for trees that are in compacted and limited soils.

PRE-WINTER WATERING

Another way to protect your evergreens is to cover them with burlap or another protective material. This will help to shield the plant from harsh winds and keep the foliage from getting damaged by heavy snow or ice.
